Daemen Tracksters Partake In UB Invitational

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team continued its 2017 outdoor season today by partaking in the University at Buffalo Invitational held at UB Stadium.  It marked the second-straight year that Daemen has participated in the meet which of course took place less than five miles away from campus.

Fresh off being named the team's Most Valuable Player at last evening's Daemen ESPY's event, junior thrower Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) turned in another solid effort today, finishing third in the javelin competition with a long throw of 49.30 meters.  Laird, who owns the team record in this event (50.63 meters), edged out teammate Jonathan Dygert (Springville, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) who finished fourth with a long toss of 46.10 meters.

Dygert was Daemen's top thrower in the hammer throw, besting teammates Andrew Strobele (Akron, N.Y./Akron), Josh Jacob (Derby, N.Y./Erie CC) and Sullivan Keller (Alden, N.Y./Alden) with a throw of 30.88 meters to finish fifth.  In the shot put competition, it was the freshman Keller who topped the quartet, finishing eighth with a throw of 11.67 meters.

On the track, the Wildcats were paced by seniors Nigel Cordulla (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation).  Cordulla ran to a 10th-place finish in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:59.71 to edge teammate Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) who finished in 12th place (2:01.04).  Jemmison took 13th place in the 200-meter dash with a sprint of 23.86 seconds.

Also on the track, senior Mike Capestrani (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) finished fifth out of nine competitors in the 400-meter dash (55.00 seconds), Drew Greenaway (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) came in 19th place in the 100-meter dash (12.19 seconds), sophomore Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) came in 17th place in the 1,5000-meter run (4:16.25) and sophomore Timothy Poole (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) came in 15th place in the 5,000-meter run (16:38.13).

Daemen returns to action two weeks from today (Saturday, May 13) at the Cardinal Last Chance Meet hosted by St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y.
