Matthews and Moffitt Establish New School Records

UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO INVITATIONAL — FULL RESULTS

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team turned in a solid effort today, finishing fifth out of 14 schools at the University at Buffalo Invitational. The field consisted of six Division I programs, one Division II program (Daemen) and seven Division III programs.

It marked Daemen's first activity since March 24 when the Wildcats took part in the UB Mid-Week Invitational.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Redshirt sophomore Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) and junior Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) both turned in record-breaking performances this afternoon.
  • Matthews set his mark in the 400 meter hurdles, as he placed fourth out of eight entrants with a time of 58.65—besting the previous school record of 1:0013 set by Andy Reid on April 14, 2015 during the Bob Kahn Invite hosted by Oberlin College. Matthews would also take part in the long jump competition today, placing eighth out of 17 entrants with a leap of 6.19 meters.
  • Moffitt set a new school record and placed fifth out of seven competitors in the high jump. Moffitt posted a leap of 1.90 meters, which bested the previous record of 1.83 meters he shared with Nick Martin. Moffitt also took part in the triple jump and placed fourth with a leap of 11.35 meters.
  • Sophomore Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) ran the 800 meters for just the second time in his short collegiate career and smashed his previous personal-best time. Clementi placed 11th out of 40 runners with a time of 1:58.77, 20 seconds faster than his previous best time of 2:18.2 and just two seconds shy of the school-record time of 1:56.05 set by Zac Ekdahl in 2014. Clementi was one of four Daemen runners in the 800 meters, three of which set personal best times. Sophomore John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) placed 14th with a personal-best time of 2:01.79 and freshman Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished 16th with a personal-best time of 2:05.11. Freshman Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y.) also ran the 800 and placed 27th (2:09.27).
  • Freshman Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) competed in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs. He placed 28th out of 36 runners in the 1,500 meters (4:41.48) and finished 23rd our the 28 runners in the 5,000 meters (17:16.25).
  • Junior Zach Brainard (Lancaster, N.Y.) and redshirt sophomore Mason Storm ( South Bristol, N.Y.) took part in the 200 meters and placed 13th (24.82) and 22nd (28.35) respectively,
  • Graduate student Sullivan Keller (Alden, N.Y.) competed in three events during the field portion and set a personal-best mark in the javelin. He placed third out of 15 competitors in the javelin with a throw of 51.14 meters—besting his previous personal best effort of 47.93 which he posted during the 2018 East Coast Conference Outdoor Championships. It was also just two meters shy of the school record (53.44) set by Zach Laird in 2018. Keller also took part in the shot put and hammer throw. He placed fourth out of 16 in the shot put (14.00 meters) and finished 6th out of 11 in the hammer (42.30 meters). He was scheduled to take part in the discus, but that event was canceled.
  • Freshman Hessen Bahgat (Fredonia, N.Y.) competed in the javelin for the first time in his collegiate career and posted a throw of 30.44 meters.
  • Daemen placed third out of six teams in the 4x400 meter relay, as the team of Matthews, Bruggman, O'Brien and Clementi posted a time of 3:34.32.

UP NEXT

The Wildcats will return to UB Stadium Friday (April 23) to take part in the UB Twilight Invitational. It will mark the final tune up for the Wildcats before they head to Rochester, N.Y. on May 1 to take part in the East Coast Conference Championships.
