ROBERT J. KANE INVITATIONAL — FULL RESULTS
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team continued its 2021-22 indoor season by taking part in the Robert J. Kane Invitational held today on the campus of Cornell University.
Today's meet feature a mixture of NCAA Division I, II and III schools. The field consisted of Cornell, Syracuse, Buffalo, Binghamton, Daemen, Mansfield, Buffalo State, Manhattanville, and King's (Pa.). The Wildcats were making their first appearance at the Kane Invitational since the 2016-17 season.
A school record effort by sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) in the 3,000 meter run highlighted the track portion of the event for Daemen, while the field events saw senior Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) post a third place showing in the long jump.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Moote ran the 3,000 meters for just the third time in his brief career and placed third out of 10 runners with a school record time of 9:04.55—eclipsing the previous record of 9:09.56 set by Lucas Canales at the 2018 Highlander Invitational. A standout on the Daemen cross country team this past fall, Moote came just four seconds shy of the breaking the school record in the mile during the Highlander Invitational last week.
- Sophomore David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) also took part in the 3,000 meters for the first time in her career and placed ninth (10:08.31).
- Sophomore Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) turned in a solid showing in the 1,000 meters. Running the race for the first time in his career, he placed fourth out of 12 runners with a time of 2:48.50. Sophomores Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Laertes Cushing (Alfred, N.Y.) also ran the 1,000 meters and placed seventh (2:55.97) and ninth (3:03.72) respectively.
- Junior John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) was one of only three participants in the 500 meters. He ran the race the first time in his career and placed second with a time of 1:12.01.
- Sophomore Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y.) and freshman Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) took part in the 800 meters and placed fifth (2:11.45) and sixth (2:11.69) respectively. Robillard's time was a personal best.
- Matthews competed in three events today. He did not qualify for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles after posting a time of 9.10 in the preliminary heat. He would also run the 200 meters for the first time in his career and place seventh with a time of 24.03. He capped his day by placing third in the long jump with a leap of 6.20—narrowly missing his personal best mark of 6.25 meters.
- Senior Zach Brainard (Lancaster, N.Y.) took part in the 200 meters and the long jump. He placed 10th in the 200 with a personal best time of 25.14 and finished seventh in the long jump (5.24 meters). Sophomore Tyrell Whitaker (Lancaster, N.Y.) posted a personal best time in the 60 meter dash (7.82) during the preliminary heats, but did not qualify for the finals.
- Sophomore Hessen Bahgat (Fredonia, N.Y.) placed eighth in the pole vault (3.66 meters), while freshman Jake Elias (Depew, N.Y.) placed 10th out of 15 throwers in the shot put (10.98 meters).
- The Daemen 4x400 relay team of Bruggman, Moote, O'Brien and Ceccarelli placed fifth among six teams with a time of 3:50.34.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to action next Saturday (Feb. 5) when they take part in the Brockport Multi on the campus of SUNY Brockport. It will mark the final event of the season before the Wildcats head to Staten Island, N.Y. of Feb. 26 to take part in the East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
