AMHERST, NY - A stretch of a little more than three minutes in the second half cost the Daemen Wildcats a shot at their first home win of the season tonight as they fell to the visiting Roberts Wesleyan Raiders 3-1 before a nice sized crowd on a cool and blustery evening at Dimp Wagner Stadium. Daemen just can't seem to shake their string of bad luck, especially in the second half of recent games, as they drop their sixth straight to fall to 3-8, 1-5.
After an evenly played first half, Daemen's
Camilo Villegas put the Wildcats ahead 1-0 with his first tally of the season in the 62nd minute. Villegas fielded a pass from fellow senior Juan Esguerra which caromed off a Raider defender in the box, gave it a touch past another defender and buried a hard low shot inside the far post and was mobbed by his teammates.
The lead wouldn't stand up, however. A failed Daemen clearing attempt allowed Roberts to have a second consecutive corner kick in the 74th minute and they would capitalize as Dominic Coco found Johnny Lobene at the top of the box. Lobene's low shot through traffic found its way past Daemen goalkeeper
Max Drexler to even things up at 1-1.
Shortly thereafter, in the 76th minute, Lobene returned the favor as he broke loose up the right side and centered a pass to Coco who put his attempt away, temporarily shocking the Wildcats who saw their lead evaporate into a one-goal deficit that quickly.
The hangover wouldn't stop there as big striker Brent Owens scored Roberts' third goal just 52 seconds after Coco's marker. Owens drove hard to the goal and flicked the ball off the post and then off of Drexler with enough force left to trickle over the goal line.
Daemen has little time to lick their wounds as they'll host AMC-foe Houghton on Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
