AMHERST, N.Y.- Building on yesterday's win over Queens College, the Daemen College women's volleyball team posted a resounding straight-sets victory (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) over the visiting Molloy College Lions on Sunday morning in their second match of what will be a six-game home stand for the Wildcats. Now on a two-match winning streak, this was Daemen's 10th win of the season and their fourth triumph in East Coast Conference play. They are now 10-9 overall and 4-5 in ECC competition this year, while the Lions slipped to 9-11 on the year and 3-4 in ECC play.
Daemen jumped out to a commanding 15-5 lead in the first set, and didn't look back, at one point holding a lead as large as 12 points en route to a 25-16 victory in the opening frame of the match. A similarly strong start to the second set staked Daemen to a 2-0 lead in sets, as the Wildcats stormed out to a 15-7 lead and coasted to a 25-17 win.
Molloy would gain their first lead of the match at 6-5 in the third set, and would hang tough with the Wildcats throughout the third frame until Daemen pulled away at the very end for a 25-20 win to cement their straight-sets victory.
The Wildcats received strong performances from seniors Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West) and Paige Tilert (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore), junior Ye Wang (Beijing, China/ Hachioji Jissen) and freshman Amber Dryzmala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster). Vazquez paced Daemen with 24 assists and Wang led the Wildcats with 17 kills. Tilert and Dryzmala tied with a team-best 12 digs apiece.
Despite the loss, Molloy got good play from freshman Alley Stefanovski. Stefanovski led Molloy with nine digs while also pacing the team with 21 assists.
Daemen continues their home stand against the LIU Post Pioneers on Friday, Oct. 25. The Pioneers are currently 16-5 overall and are third in the ECC with a 6-2 mark.
