BROOKVILLE, N.Y.- The Daemen College men's soccer team visited No. 2 Long Island University Post this afternoon at Robert Blitz Field in an East Coast Conference matchup, dropping a 9-1 decision.
Senior forward Kyle Clifford (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis) had the lone goal for the Wildcats, putting them on the board quickly when he scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway. Clifford slipped the ball past the LIU goalie in the fourth minute of the contest, giving Daemen its first lead in conference play this season.
It was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats had no answer for forward Eivind Austboe who put the Pioneers ahead 2-1 with goals in the 24th and 38th minutes of the game. Austboe led the Pioneers with three goals, adding his third of the game just before halftime to put the defending ECC champions ahead 5-1 .
LIU Post also got single tallies from Carl Lystad (42nd minute), Eirik Bjoernoe (44th minute), Johann Krisjansson (55th minute), Vincent Tavernese (69th minute), Cemil Turan (74th minuite) and Cameron Gamble (81st minute).
The Wildcats were under pressure most of the game as junior goalkeeper Matt Daddario (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) was called upon to make seven saves. He was relieved in the 67th minute by teammate Daniel Romer (Amsterdam, Netherlands / St. Nicholas Lyceum) who made three stops. The Pioneers launched 40 shots, placing almost half (19) of them on frame.
LIU Post also held an 10-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The win pushes LIU Post to a clean 10-0 record on the year and a 4-0 record in conference play. With the loss, Daemen drops to 3-8 on the season and 0-5 in ECC play.
Daemen will be back in action as they travel to Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 12 to take on Rochester College in a non-conference game. The Warriors are dual members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
