Le Moyne Hands Daemen First Loss

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior forward Emily Greer went 4-for-6 from three-point land and totaled 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to an 80-68 victory over Daemen College here tonight.

Le Moyne, a member of the NCAA Division II Northeast-10 Conference, improved to 2-0. Daemen, a member of the NCAA Division II East Coast Conference, suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1.

Graduate student Kayla Stroman, who played three seasons of Division I basketball at Niagara University, helped the Le Moyne cause with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Senior Maddy McKnight added 13 points for the hosts.

Five players reached double digits in points for Daemen. Sophomore guard Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) totaled 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while senior guard Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) also netted 16 points and added eight rebounds and two assists. Freshman Taylor Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata) recorded her second double-double of the year and finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Fellow rookie Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Somara Colon (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Haven Village Prep) contributed 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

Daemen took an early 7-6 lead following a bucket by Stoddard five minutes into the game, but a three-pointer by Stroman sparked the Dolphins on an 11-0 run over the next two minutes. A basket by junior Maddie Hahesy with 12:43 left before halftime capped the run and gave the hosts a 17-7 lead.

Le Moyne held a 21-15 lead midway through the first half, when the hosts took control with a 14-4 spurt that gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the half, 35-19. Once again, a triple by Stroman ignited the run, which was capped by back-to-back baskets by McKnight. Daemen closed the half with six unanswered points and Le Moyne took a 35-25 lead into the break.

Daemen cut the Le Moyne lead to seven points, 41-34, after McDonell drilled a three-pointer three minutes into the second half, but the hosts answered with seven-straight points and regained a 14-point lead, 48-34, after Stroman canned her third three-pointer with 15 minutes left.

The teams traded points for the next two minutes and Le Moyne held a 56-40 lead when a Stoddard three-pointer sparked the Wildcats on a 13-4 run that also featured three-pointers by Stilwell and Heinold. A Stilwell layup with 8:55 to play capped the rally and cut the Le Moyne lead to seven points, 60-53. Le Moyne regrouped following a timeout and put together a decisive 12-2 run over the next five minutes. A layup by Greer with 3:27 left capped the run and gave the Dolphins a 72-55 lead. The hosts maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Daemen shot just 29-percent (10-34) in the first half, but regrouped and connected on 16-of-32 (50%) of its shots over the final 20 minutes. The Wildcats committed 16 turnovers, which Le Moyne converted into 14 points. The hosts connected on 8-of-23 three-pointers in the game, while Daemen was just 4-of-24 (0-12 in the first half) from long range. Le Moyne finished with a slim 52-48 edge in rebounding.

Daemen returns to action Saturday (Nov. 16) when it travels to long-time rival Point Park University for a 2 p.m. game. It will mark the 45th all-time meeting between the two former American Mideast Conference rivals.
