AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team has shown a flare for the dramatic of late, downing longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College 2-1 in double overtime on the strength of
Alex Reid's (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) game-winner in the 106th minute of the contest. For Daemen, it was their second double overtime win in as many games, having beaten St. Thomas Aquinas College by an identical 2-1 score last Sunday. More importantly, both clutch performances have come in East Coast Conference play as the Wildcats even their overall record (5-5-0) while moving to 2-3-0 in the league this season. Roberts Wesleyan had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-3-2 overall and 3-3-0 in conference.
After a scoreless first half, junior
Caleb Holmes (Cuba, N.Y./Cuba-Rushford) put the Wildcats on top with his second goal of the year which came in the 48th minute. Newcomer
Frank Poppolo (Brampton, Ont./West Virginia Wesleyan College) hit Reid with a pass as he was streaking into the right side of the box. Reid then sent a crossing feed into the middle of the box where it was sent home by Holmes.
After withstanding an offensive onslaught by RWC for much of the remainder of the half, the Daemen defense finally buckled. The Wildcats were whistled for a foul resulting in a free kick from straight on and about 25 yards out. RWC's Michael Cunningham sent a perfectly placed curving shot around the Daemen wall and into the upper left portion of the goal, knotting the score at one-apiece in the 86th minute.
That set the stage for Reid's heroics in the second overtime period. Fellow sophomore
Matt Cordovani (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) carried the ball up the left side and found a streaking Reid in the middle of the box who coolly placed a one-touch shot to the back of the net, sending his teammates and the Daemen faithful in attendance into a frenzy.
For Reid, it was already the second time in his career that he's netted a "golden goal" against RWC. Reid scored 3:22 into the second overtime period to push Daemen to a 3-2 win over the Redhawks in both teams' 2013 season-opener. That win snapped Daemen's six-game skid in the all-time series against their former American Mideast Conference rivals, and the teams have now gone to overtime in three straight meetings, while the last four have been decided by just one goal.
Daemen has now won two straight ECC games for the first time since joining the league in 2013.
Senior goalkeeper
Matt Daddario (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) made six saves to earn the win for the Wildcats. He and classmate
Sam Rugg (Freeville, N.Y./Dryden) were honored in a pre-game ceremony celebrating their respective Daemen careers.
Daemen will look for its third consecutive win when the Wildcats travel to The Big Apple to face Queens College this Friday, Oct. 17 in an ECC affair. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
