AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team put up a valliant fight but could not generate enough offense to upset No. 25 Mercy College in East Coast Conference action today at Dimp Wagner Stadium, falling to the Mavericks 2-0.  With the loss, Daemen falls to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in ECC play, while the nationally-ranked Mavericks improve to 8-1 overall while keeping their unblemished conference mark (3-0) intact.

MacKenzie Cochrane put the Mavericks on the board early in the first half, registering what turned out to be the game-winning goal in only the fifth minute of the contest.  She sent a hard, low shot inside the far post from the right wing to put the visitors ahead early.

From there, nobody reached the back of the net until Mercy got a late insurance tally off the head of Jessica DeLeon.  Mercy's Amanda McLean sent a crossing feed into the center of the box that found the awaiting head of DeLeon who snuck one under the crossbar for a two-goal edge in the 80th minute.

Daemen goalkeeper Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) stood tall for the Wildcats, making a season-high nine saves to keep it close.  Mercy launched 16 total shots at the Daemen goalkeeper, 12 of which landed on frame.  Daemen managed five total shots, four of which came in the opening period.  Shots on goal came from freshman Stephanie Zurales (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) and senior Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) in the first half.

Daemen looks to break through in conference play when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College for an 11 a.m. kickoff this Sunday, Oct. 5.
