AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss in their season finale today, falling to perennial East Coast Conference powerhouse Long Island University Post at Dimp Wagner Stadium. With the win, LIU Post picked up a share of the ECC regular-season crown, sharing it with New York Institute of Technology whom Daemen played to a close 1-0 contest on Halloween night.
Daemen fell to 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the league to closeout the 2014 season.
LIU Post, the top goal-scoring team in the league, exploded for four first-half goals with that conference championship prize clearly in their sights. Johann Kristjansson scored his first goal of the season when he dribbled through defenders and ripped a shot to the back of the net in the 7th minute to put the Pioneers on the board.
Kristjansson added an assist when he found Dale McDonald in the 27th minute to make the score 2-0.
Eivind Austboe added back-to-back tallies before the end of the half, giving the Pioneers an insurmountable 4-0 lead, while sewing up the league's scoring title for himself. It was Austboe's 14th and 15th goals of the year, the first of which came on a penalty kick in the 37th minute.
Per Forgaard added the guests' fifth goal of the game, scoring in the 56th minute to provide the final margin.
The Pioneers finished with 19 total shots and nine shots on goal. Daemen sent seven shots towards the goal, placing three on frame. The Daemen shots on goal came from junior
Caleb Holmes (Cuba, N.Y./Cuba-Rushford), senior
Sam Rugg (Freeville, N.Y./Dryden) and freshman
Ryan Haines (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport).
Senior goalkeeper
Matt Daddario (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) made four saves in defeat for the Wildcats.
Daemen closes out the year with its first five-win season since 2010, with all five victories coming against NCAA Division II competition.
