Beverly's Big Night Leads Daemen Past Dominican

Senior Forward Becomes Daemen's Leader In Career Blocks

AMHERST, N.Y. – Senior Gerald Beverly (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) totaled 26 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and seven blocks to lead the Daemen College men's basketball team to 79-72 non-conference victory over Dominican (N.Y.) College here today. Daemen, a member of the East Coast Conference, snapped a two-game slide and improved to 3-2 on the year. Dominican, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, saw its two-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 2-3.

The win extended Daemen's home winning streak to 38 consecutive games. The streak dates back to the start of the 2011-12 season. Daemen's home winning streak ranks as the second longest in the nation among all NCAA men's basketball programs. Only Division III Albertus Magnus College, which is currently riding a 42-game home winning streak, owns a longer home winning streak than Daemen.

Beverly, the 2014-15 ECC Co-Preseason Player of the Year, recorded his third-straight (and 30th career) double-double and has now scored in double figures in 35-straight games. He has also now recorded a block in 38-straight games and his seven blocked shots gives him 238 for his career and moves him into first place in career blocks among Daemen's all-time leaders. He entered the game just three blocks shy of replacing 2006 graduate Ron Wright as the program's leader in career blocks.

Junior Torrence Dyck (Rochester, N.Y./San Jacinto College) helped the Daemen cause with 23 points, while classmate Supreme Hannah (Rochester, N.Y.) drained four three-pointers and equaled his career-high for points (18) while also dishing out five assists.

Junior guard Joe Clinton (Pearl River, N.Y.) paced Dominican with three three-pointers, 19 points and five assists. Senior forward Nick Smith (Middletown, N.Y), who entered the game averaging 27.0 points per game, connected on just 4-of-13 shots and finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Dominican connected on nine of its first 12 shots en route to a 22-15 lead midway through the first half. Meanwhile, Daemen made just five of its first 15 shots, but cut the lead to four points after Beverly dunked off a nice feed from Dyck and was fouled. Beverly made the free throw to make the score 22-18 with 10:22 left to play in the half. The Wildcats later cut the lead to a point, 24-23, following a three-pointer by Hannah with 7:48 left in the half.

The game was tied at 27-27 when the Wildcats scored six unanswered points. Back-to-back buckets by Dyck capped the spurt and gave Daemen a 33-27 lead with 3:18 left before intermission. Dominican outscored the Wildcats 7-2 the rest of the half and Daemen took a 35-34 lead into the break.

Daemen scored the first seven points of the second half and the Wildcats later took a 44-36 lead after senior Jordan Greene (Fort Edward, N.Y./South Glens Falls) canned two free throws with 15:49 left. Dominican answered with a 17-8 run and took a 53-52 lead after Clinton drained a three-pointer with 10:37 left to play. Daemen answered with a three-pointer by Hannah and later regained a seven-point lead, 60-53, following an alley-oop dunk by Beverly with just over eight minutes left.

A three-pointer by Hannah with 5:41 left gave the hosts a 67-60 lead. Dominican cut the lead to three points twice in the final minutes, the last when a baseline jumper by senior Robert Hueston (Middletown, N.Y.) with 1:33 remaining made it 75-72. Senior Aaron Davis' (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) jumper at the other end was off the mark, but Beverly collected the offensive rebound and fed Greene for a layup that made it 77-72 with 53 seconds left. Daemen forced a Dominican turnover at the other end, but the Wildcats made things interesting by missing four free throws over the next 30 seconds. Dominican was unable to take advantage and Beverly's two free throws with 14 seconds left closed out the scoring.

Daemen shot 48-percent (15-31) in the second half and 43.5-percent (27-62) for the game. Dominican cooled off after its fast start and shot just 41-percent (26-62) for the game. Daemen finished with a slight edge in total rebounds (39-35) and the Wildcats collected 16 offensive rebounds which led to 20 second chance points.

The Wildcats are idle until Dec. 12 when they open East Coast Conference play by hosting Molloy College.
