Stoddard Paces Daemen With Ninth Double-Double

Daemen (7-17, 4-14 ECC)  26-47—73

District of Columbia (17-4, 13-2 ECC) 49-42—91

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Milena Bubnievic (Leskovac, Serbia) totaled 18 points and eight rebounds and junior Denikka Brent (Chesapeake, Va.) added 16 points and eight boards to lead the University of the District of Columbia to a 91-73 victory over Daemen College here tonight in East Coast Conference women's basketball action.

UDC has won nine of its last 10 games and improved to 17-4 overall and 13-2 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 7-17 overall and 4-14 in the league.

Senior Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) recorded her ninth double-double of the season for Daemen, as she scored a career-high 26 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.  Stoddard, who connected on 8-of-11 shots overall (4-of-5 from downtown) and went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, also handed out seven assists and in the process moved into fifth place in career assists at Daemen with 466. Sophomore Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) also drilled four three-pointers for the Wildcats and finished with 14 points and three assists. Stilwell's four triples gives her 69 for the season and leaves her seven shy of setting a new school-record for three-pointers made in a season. Freshman Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) also scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

UDC junior Telisha Turner (Wilmington, Del.), who entered the game tied for first among the ECC scoring leaders (19.2 ppg), connected on just 4-of-11 shots and finished with 11 points.

An early 11-0 run gave the Firebirds a 16-5 lead five minutes into the game, and the hosts later took a 28-10 lead following a layup by sophomore Taj Baldwin-Kollore (Newport News, Va.) with 9:46 left before intermission. Daemen then got back-to-back buckets from junior Jillian Fitzner (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata), before the Firebirds ran off another 11-0 run. Brent scored the final six points during the run. The teams traded baskets over the final 3:34 of the half and UDC took a 49-26 lead into the break.

Daemen, which made just three of 12 from behind the three-point arc in the first half, went 4-for-4 from downtown in the first 3:39 of the second half and used a 14-6 run during that span to cut the UDC lead to 15 points, 55-40. Stilwell made three triples during the spurt and a three-pointer by freshman Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) capped the run. UDC answered with six unanswered points and the Firebirds maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

Daemen shot 53-percent (17-32) from the field in the second half and finished 26-for-61 (43%) overall. The Wildcats connected on 11-of-30 three-pointers, marking the sixth time this season they have made 10 or more three-pointers in a game. UDC shot 52-percent (20-39) in the first half and finished 38-for-78 (49%) overall. The Firebirds, who entered the game averaging a league-high 7.4 three-pointers a game, connected on 10-of-25 from downtown. UDC posted a 46-33 edge in rebounds and collected 15 offensive rebounds—which led to a 14-5 advantage in second-chance points. The hosts also posted a commanding 40-14 advantage in points in the paint.

Daemen is idle until Friday (Feb. 21) when it hosts Dowling College in an ECC game at 6 p.m.
