AMHERST, N.Y. – Senior
Casey Sheehan (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) scored a team-high 27 points and collected nine rebounds and six assists to lead the Daemen College men's basketball team to a 73-57 victory - the Wildcats' 33rd straight home win - over visiting Queens College, a member of the East Coast Conference (ECC), this evening at Lumsden Gymnasium.
Daemen completed the season-series sweep of Queens and improved to 17-6 overall and 14-3 in the ECC. The Knights dropped to 5-16 overall and 5-10 in the league. The Wildcats have now gone 34-1 at home since the start of the 2011-2012 season and have won 81-percent (90-21) of their home games over the past eight seasons
Sheehan's 27 points marks his 6
th 20-point outing of the season and the 22
nd such game in his career. Following Sheehan, junior forward
Gerald Beverly (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) recorded yet another double-double on the season after scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Beverly also denied away four Queens' shots. Senior forward
Kadeem Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) also added 11 points while teammate
Jordan Greene (Fort Edward, N.Y./South Glens Falls) chipped in 8 points for the Wildcats. Senior guard
Mark Coppola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) also contributed a team high eight assists to the Daemen cause.
Daemen, who led the entire ball game, started off with a traditional three-point play by Johnson thirty seconds into the game. The teams traded baskets for most of the first half as the score stood at 27-23 after a three-pointer Greene with 4:45 left to go until intermission. This sparked the Wildcats on a 16-0 run. Another three-pointer by Greene capped the spurt and Daemen went into intermission with a 40-23 lead.
The Wildcats held onto the lead and led by double digits for the rest of the game after going 14-for-25 (56-percent) from the field in the second half. Daemen found their largest lead of the game at the 8:33 mark after a layup by Sheehan putting Daemen up 62-39.From there, the remainder of the game was essentially a back-and-forth affair as the Knights came no closer than 14 points. With less than three minutes to play, Queens scored the last two points of the game leaving the final margin at 73-55.
Queens shot just 31-percent (19-61) from the field, while Daemen went 28-for-54 (52-percent) of its attempts. Daemen was 7-for-22 (32-percent) from downtown while Queens went just 3-for-16 (19-percent) from beyond the arc for the game. The Wildcats made 10-of-15 free throws overall while the Knights shot 16-of-24 from the charity stripe.
The hosts posted an edge in points in the paint (34-20) and fast break points (12-2). Daemen also finished with 19 assists in the game compared to Queens' nine. The visitors had an advantage on the glass out rebounding the Wildcats 41-35 which resulted in a 18-11 edge in second-chance points for the Knights.
Amir Tarif tallied a double-double scoring a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights. Patrick Parker and Jeremiah Mordi both contributed 11 points while teammate Kyhiem Chaplin added seven points to the Queens cause.
Daemen is idle until Friday (Feb. 14) when it travels to the University of the District of Columbia for an ECC game. UDC, who lost to Daemen 97-42 earlier this year, stands at 3-16 overall and 1-12 in the league.
