WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team secured their first victory of the season with a 7-2 decision over East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Molloy College this evening. The Golden Lions, who were voted sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll, dropped to 3-0 (0-1 ECC) on the year while the Wildcats improved to 1-4 (1-3 ECC).

"I'm very proud of how far this team has come this year.  Even though she lost, Hayle fought back from 5-2 in the second set and played a great match," said head coach Stephen Beatty. "I would also like to congratulate Gretchen and Celina for getting their first collegiate wins."

Daemen's triumph was led by junior Aman Shamaa (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and freshman Celina Wozniak (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East). The duo paired up to defeat Molloy's Emily Rosen and Christie Catterson 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles slot.  Wozniak then defeated Rosen in No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2 while Shamaa out-matched Catterson in No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1.

Freshman Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) conquered Molloy's Danielle Bloecker 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles while also teaming up with junior Tianna Washington (North Chili, N.Y. / Churchville Chili) in No. 3 doubles to defeat Tiffany Nagasawa and Alisha Crespo 8-0.

The Wildcats also received wins in both No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles. Sarah Crissy (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) overpowered Nagasawa 6-0, 6-2 while Washington beat Crespo 6-2, 6-3

Daemen will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 13) as they will face off against the Queens College Knights in another ECC match at 1 p.m. at the Park Country Club.
