Men's Soccer Blanked By Queens

AMHERST, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) made a career-high nine saves but it wasn't enough to lead the Daemen College men's soccer team past visiting Queens College today, as the Knights scored a 3-0 victory in East Coast Conference action at Dimp Wagner Stadium.

With the loss, Daemen falls to 2-7-1 on the season, including a 0-3-1 mark in ECC play.  Queens improved to 3-6-0 overall, while earning its third ECC win of the season (3-2-0).

Figler was tested early and often in this one as the Daemen offense just never got rolling.  Queens controlled much of the possession and it showed up on the stat sheet, out-shooting Daemen 21-3 in the contest.

After Figler turned away the first two Knights' shots on goal, and the Wildcats were credited with a team save on their third attempt, the Knights got on the board at the 14:58 mark.  A crossing feed from Isaiah Kossine on the right wing found its way to the far post where it was one-touched over the goal line by a streaking Pol Narbona.  For Narbona, the team's leading scorer a season ago (16 points), it was his first marker of the season.

Figler was up to the task on another Narbona shot attempt at the 22:29 mark, but Queens would eventually go ahead by two.  Kossine found Nicholas Matusewicz with a pass up the center of the field, and Matusewicz split the Daemen defense and connected on a shot from just inside the top of the box before Figler could come out and cut down his angle.

Daemen registered its first shot early in the second half, off the foot of freshman Kyle Tracy (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), but it was turned aside by QC starting goalkeeper Robbie Webster.  The play resulted in a Daemen corner kick, but the Wildcats couldn't muster anything on the ensuing attempt.

QC would go ahead 3-0 at the 62:14 mark, making good on its own corner kick opportunity.  Glen Reid sent the ball into a scrum in the middle of the box.  After deflecting off several players, Calvin Moyes touched the ball to the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

That was enough offense for Queens which kept Daemen at bay for the remainder of the contest.  A header by junior forward Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) was perhaps Daemen's best scoring chance of the day, but it was saved by relief goalkeeper James Brostowski at the 84:44 mark.

Daemen will regroup quickly as the Wildcats play host to Molloy College in another East Coast Conference affair tomorrow, October 11, beginning at 1 p.m.
