AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College women's soccer player
Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for games played October 5-12.
O'Leary, a 5-foot-6 freshman goalkeeper, helped Daemen to a 1-1 record last week and picked up the third solo shutout of her rookie campaign in Daemen's 1-0 overtime victory over ECC foe Molloy College. Â It also marked her second shutout in league play this year, having recorded one in Daemen's 2-0 win versus Saint Thomas Aquinas College on September 27. Â Her first shutout came in non-league play with the Wildcats' 0-0 double-overtime tie against Walsh University on September 13.
O'Leary opened last week's action by making three saves in a tough 1-0 defeat to Queens College on Saturday, October 10. Â She followed that up with seven saves the following day in the win over Molloy which moved Daemen to 2-3-0 in ECC play this season. Â The two ECC wins mark a program high since joining the league back in 2013.
After adding a win last night versus Alfred State College (6-0) in non-conference action, O'Leary has started each of Daemen's 14 games this season and her 5-8-1 record matches the team's overall mark. Â Her five wins rank third among ECC goalies, while she also ranks second in the league with 62 total saves this season.
In picking up this weekly honor, she becomes just the second Daemen player to earn ECC Rookie of the Week honors joining former goalkeeper
Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) who
picked up the accolade in the opening week of the 2013 season.
O'Leary and the Wildcats are idle until a matchup with N.Y. Institute of Technology on Friday, October 23.
