ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat in double overtime to host Roberts Wesleyan College at RWC Stadium tonight, as the Wildcats came up just short of pulling the upset over the East Coast Conference-leading Redhawks.
With the loss, Daemen falls to 3-7-1 on the season, and 1-2-0 in ECC play. Â RWC remains perfect in league play (3-0-0) while jumping to 7-1-1 overall.
Freshman
Andrea D'Sa (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) got Daemen on the board, notching the first goal of her career at the 5:29 mark. Â She beat RWC goalkeeper Mary Kate Eckert with a shot that rolled across the goal line to put the upset-minded visitors on top early.
D'Sa's goal appeared as if it would stand up, but the Redhawks picked up the equalizer from Bella Mitrovski, her ninth of the season, at the 73:35 mark. Â Mitrovski fired a chip shot that made its way over the head of Daemen goalkeeper
Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), and into the back of the net to tie the score.
Daemen suffered a blow late in regulation when stalwart sophomore defender
Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) was issued her second yellow card of the evening at the 85:29 mark, putting Daemen down a player for the remainder of the contest.
Ninety minutes wasn't enough to settle things, and neither was 100 minutes as the team's headed to double overtime.
Then, RWC picked up the "golden goal" off the foot of Brittany Houghton, also her ninth of the season. Â Houghton scored at the 100:56 mark, less than a minute into the second extra session to deliver the win for the Redhawks.
It was the third-straight win for RWC in the all-time series against the Wildcats. Â Both teams, now members of the ECC, are former members of the American Mideast Conference. Â RWC holds a 10-6-3 edge in the all-time series.
Daemen is idle until hosting Queens College on Saturday, October 10 for a 1 p.m. East Coast Conference contest.
