From The Director of Athletics' Desk...

Daemen Athletics waited a long time for the inaugural year of active NCAA Division II membership to start, and then the first month of full-fledged Division II competition went by in a flash.  We have truly enjoyed watching our teams take the field, course or court in the heat of competition.  For the first time in Daemen history potential NCAA tournament berths are at stake.  Daemen's fall varsity teams have embraced their new status and are showing immense toughness and character through the ups and downs that go with heightened competition.  In short, they are doing exactly what we ask of them - BEING FIERCE!

September marked another milestone for Daemen Athletics with the official opening of the Academic and Wellness Center (AWC), across Main Street from the core of our campus.  The AWC, a $5.6 million refurbishment of a vacated YMCA building, not only extends our campus footprint, but it also provides new and exciting opportunities for our student-athletes, as well as the entire campus community.  The new fitness center, complete with state-of-the-art equipment, will become a hub for the strength and conditioning training of our 16 intercollegiate athletics programs, while also providing the campus community with ample space and equipment to stay fit.  The AWC's gymnasium gives us a satellite practice venue, and it will become a hub as well - a hub for our expanding campus recreation and club sports programs which, for the first time ever, are officially under our umbrella.  The opening of the AWC officially moves Daemen Athletics to "Daemen Athletics & Recreation."  Look for more exciting news regarding Daemen Athletics & Recreation in October.

The opening of the AWC allowed us to upgrade our existing athletics facility on the main campus.  We were able to start the fall seasons with a new Athletic Training Room in the space formerly occupied by our weight room.  The new athletic training facility is more spacious, and better equipped to deal with the rigors of intercollegiate athletic competition in today's day and age.  Our talented and dedicated sports medicine staff, led by Director of Sports Medicine Jeff Sage, and our student-athletes deserve only the best when it comes to preventative and rehabilitation treatments, and that is what we've provided with this newly refurbished space.  September also saw the opening of our new Student-Athlete Academic Center.  This space was created and developed by Associate Athletics Director Jessica Gorski and funded by a generous donor.  The Center provides our student-athletes with a consistent and available space to study or receive academic support. We hope you stop by and take a look at these new spaces.  In October, we will be opening a new officials' locker room, soccer coaches' suite and NCAA Compliance Office suite.

September also saw the launch of our newly re-designed website, daemenwildcats.com.  If you haven't had a chance, I invite you to check it out.  I sincerely hope you like the site design which was developed by our partners at SIDEARM Sports with the wants and needs of our fans squarely in mind.

I'm also excited about the hiring of Jennifer Kinyon as our first-ever women's bowling coach, which we announced earlier this month.  Under her leadership, the Daemen women's bowling program is prepping for its first competitions beginning in October. The program's emergence helped pave the way for the East Coast Conference to sponsor the sport for the first time ever this season.

Looking ahead, we continue to have discussions with the Town of Amherst regarding potential development sites for an outdoor stadium which would house our men's and women's soccer programs.  Establishing an outdoor venue for these programs remains a top agenda item as we continue to develop our next strategic plan.

Although much work still needs to be done, our program continues to shine, and I thank you for taking the time to read about the positive strides we've made.  If you like what you read, I invite you to stop by campus for a tour of our facility, or perhaps to take in an exciting NCAA Division II-level competition for one of our teams.  I think you'll only continue to be impressed with the dedication and passion that our coaches and student-athletes show on a daily basis.

If you'd like to talk about the direction of our program, or investigate ways that you can make an impact on today's student-athletes, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at bniland@daemen.edu or (716) 472-5951.  As always, we are grateful for your continued support of our endeavors and I look forward to briefing you again next month on the progress of our program.

Until then, BE FIERCE!
