WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team opened its 2015-16 season in fine fashion today, downing host Molloy College, 9-0, in East Coast Conference action at the Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center. The win marked Daemen's second in its last three season openers, and its second-straight in the all-time series versus Molloy.
The match got started with Daemen sweeping through doubles action. The closest doubles match came in the No. 1 slot where
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) held off Molloy's Tatiana Rajaona and Megan Scali, winning 8-5.
The Wildcats also picked up doubles wins from their No. 2 and 3 teams today, both of which featured first-time pairings.
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) took down Molloy's Christie Catterson and Emily Rosen, 8-2, while
Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and
Aman Shamaa (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) were 8-3 winners against Krystal Bottone and Tiffany Nagasawa.
The momentum from a doubles sweep carried into singles play where Daemen raced through matches relatively unscathed. Hollins (6-2, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles), Scanlan (6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles), Ringler (6-2, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles) and Robins (6-0, 6-0 win in No. 4 singles) all earned their second points of the match.
The Wildcats also picked up singles wins from freshman
Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and sophomore
Sarah Crissy (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) in the No. 5 and 6 slots, respectively. Fragale won 6-0, 6-2 over Nagasawa while Crissy took down Bottone, 6-0, 6-2, completing the first 9-0 sweep for the Wildcats since their 2013-14 season finale (April 19, 2014 vs. Medaille College).
Daemen looks to sweep its opening trip of the season when they face Queens College tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The Knights were picked second in the
ECC preseason poll which was announced last month.
