AMHERST, N.Y. - Dr. Gary A. Olson, President of Daemen College and regular contributor to
The Huffington Post, recently published an article entitled "
NCAA's Continuing Commitment to Preventing Concussions".
The article, published on January 11 in the national news agency's college blog, details the National Collegiate Athletic Association's efforts to be at the forefront in the study of concussions and their effects, both short- and long-term, as well as the implementation of player safety initiatives dating back to 1906.
Olson continues in the discussion by detailing the unprecedented partnership formed between the NCAA and the U.S. Department of Defense in 2014 "to conduct the largest research study of concussion in sports ever attempted."
Olson writes, "Clearly this kind of broad-based concussions study is necessary, and the project reflects the NCAA's historic track record of proactive leadership on the matter of head injuries."
Olson, who assumed the presidency at Daemen in 2013, has
contributed to The Huffington Post for the last several years, in addition to his monthly column on higher education administration for the
Chronicle of Higher Education. This past summer, he was
appointed to the NCAA's Division II Presidents Council, the body that helps set policy and the strategic direction for all Division II colleges nationwide.
