Wildcats Hammer Four Time Defending Conference Champs Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team had a stellar performance on all facets, beating defending ECC Champions, The University of Bridgeport in four sets today at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium (25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17).

Today's battle of the second and third ranked teams, improved the Wildcats to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference.  Bridgeport the four-time defending conference champions, fell to 7-8 overall and 4-1 in the league.  With the win, Daemen broke the six game all-time losing streak to UB.

Freshman Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) had a stand-out performance to pace the Wildcats, she led the team in kills (13), aces (4), and blocks (3).  Her 13 kills and 4 service aces were good for career highs.  Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y. / Stony Brook) was the only other member on both teams to post double-digit kills with 10.  Two-time Rookie of the Week, Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster), controlled the Daemen offense dishing out a match-high 45 assists.

Daemen's defense held Bridgeport to 39 match kills and totaled 58 digs.  Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) and Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) each tallied 16 digs.  Ashley Drzymala added eight kills, three digs and two blocks in the upset.

Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden), 2015 All-Conference First Team Selection, registered eight kills and two blocks to lead the Purple Knights.  Sophomore setter, Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) turned in 35 assists, three aces, and three blocks in the losing effort.

In the first set, Bridgeport jumped out to a 10-4 lead after trailing early to the Wildcats 0-2.  Four service aces by Bruna Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) ignited the six-point run.  Daemen closed the gap 10-12 off of consecutive kills from Ashley Drzymala and Meghan Ballou.  The two teams continued to battle back and forth to find themselves tied 16-16.  The Wildcats built a 23-19 advantage that featured four kills by Meghan Ballou.  A kill from Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) followed by two Ellie Rich service aces put Bridgeport with one, 23-22.  The Wildcats were able to withstand the Purple Knight comeback, and prevail 25-23.

Bridgeport turned the tables in the second set, as the Purple Knights got out to a fast start.  UB used three Santos kills and five Daemen errors to build a 10-2 lead.  Daemen was able to side out on a kill from Meghan Ballou, after another five-point run by Bridgeport 15-4.  The Wildcats fought off five-straight points to narrow the deficit 18-10, which included a service ace from Dolegowski and a kill by Scanlan.  Daemen crawled with six points but was unable to yield the Purple Knights who cruised to the 25-17 victory.  The Wildcats had 10 attacks with nine errors for a match-low .030 hitting percentage.

The teams traded points early in the third swing set with the score even at 8-8.  Daemen took the next three points, off of the serve of Meghan Ballou, yet Bridgeport was able to fight back within one.  Rachel Stephenson (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) found the floor beating the Purple Knights defense to take the 14-10 lead.  Daemen forced a Bridgeport timeout after extending their lead 17-12.  The Purple Knights pulled within three points, 22-19, but kills from Ashley Drzymala and Stephenson pushed the Wildcats to triumph 25-19.

The fourth and deciding set saw the Wildcats use a 5 point run to take the 17-10 lead.  Daemen used their commanding momentum to close out the victory 25-17.  The Wildcats had a match-high .355 hitting percentage in the final set, only committing four errors, with 15 kills, stunning to Purple Knights.

The Wildcats travel out of state to New Hampshire for non-conference action against Franklin Pierce next Friday, October 14.  The following day, Daemen participates in the Mercy tri-match, first, they face off against the hosts followed by Saint Anslem College.
