Metz Announces Spring Schedule For Women's Triathlon Team

Second-Year Program Heads To Florida Twice For Competitions

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's triathlon team will compete twice during the spring semester to round out its 2016-17 season as head coach Jon Metz announced the team's upcoming slate today.  Both competitions will take place in the state of Florida this spring.

First, Metz's squad will partake in the Clermont Draft Legal Challenge on Saturday, March 4 at Lake Louisa State Park, just a short drive from Orlando.  The race features a 750-meter, open-water swim in Lake Louisa, followed by a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run.

On April 30, the Wildcats return to the Sunshine State for the St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg.  This event features a 750-kilometer, open-water swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run.

Daemen's triathlon team, which is in its second year as a varsity-sponsored sport at the College, last competed on September 25 at the Deer Creek Fall Challenge in Mt. Sterling, Ohio.  Ashley Cheff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) paced the squad by finishing as the champion in the race's female elite open division, while teammates Nichole Geiger (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Jenifer Igoe (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) finished first and second, respectively, in the female age 20-24 grouping.  The race was the last of three that the Wildcats competed in during the fall 2016 semester.

The sport of triathlon, which combines swimming, biking and running into a race-style event, has been termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 13 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.
