GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered its second loss in as many days during a tour of the Wolverine State, falling 9-0 to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference powerhouse Grand Valley State University today at the Premier Athletic and Tennis Club.
The loss sends Daemen to 2-4 overall this season, while the host GVSU Lakers (1-0) pick up their first dual-match victory this year. Â The Lakers are coming off a 17-6 campaign last season which earned them an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament.
GVSU opened the match by sweeping through the three doubles matchups. Â The Daemen duo of
Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) and
Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) put up the best resistance for the Wildcats, doing so in the No. 1 doubles slot where they fell 8-6 to Alex van de Steenoven and Zach Phillips.
In singles action, GVSU went through relatively unscathed. Â Veitengruber matched up with van de Steenoven in the No. 1 position, falling 6-2, 6-2. Â Gentile dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Phillips in the No. 2 slot. Â

Jorge Arias (Santiago, Chile/American British School) made his debut in the No. 6 singles slot, falling to Andrew Heuerman, 6-1, 6-2.
Daemen is back in action next Saturday, February 20 when the Wildcats play host to Cedarville University beginning at 5 p.m. at Miller Tennis Center.
