WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team officially opened the spring portion of its 2015-16 schedule this afternoon by blanking visiting Elmira College, 9-0, at Miller Tennis Center.
The match marked Daemen's first since closing the abbreviated fall season with a 9-0 shutout of Houghton College back on October 14, and the win today evens the Wildcats' overall record at 2-2. Â Elmira, a NCAA Division III affiliate and member of the Empire 8 Conference fell to 0-2 after competing in their first dual match since a 7-2 loss at Oswego State on September 23.
Daemen opened the match today by sweeping through doubles competition and dropping just four total sets in the process. Â Seniors
Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) and
Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) formed a veteran pairing in the No. 1 doubles slot, and their 8-1 defeat of EC's Satchal Waters and Austin Mansell set the tone for the match.
Junior
John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and sophomore
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) downed EC's Patrick Tracey and Chris Konow, 8-2, in the No. 2 doubles slot, and junior
Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) teamed with redshirt-freshman
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) to score an 8-1 win in the No. 3 doubles position over EC's Yu Ikeda and Yaniv Kogan.
Veitengruber, Lowe, Kerr and the LeMar brothers all picked up singles victories to give themselves two-point afternoons to seal the victory. Â Lowe was tested in the No. 3 post by Mansell, but edged him 7-6, 6-3. Â
John LeMar was the lone Wildcat to win in three sets, besting Tracey 7-6, 5-7, 1-0.
The Wildcats also picked up a singles victory in the No. 6 position from junior
John Wilson (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse) to complete the whitewash. Â Wilson won 6-4, 6-0 over Kogan.
Next up for the Wildcats is a road trip to The Wolverine State next weekend to face Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members Hillsdale College (Saturday, Feb. 13) and Grand Valley State University (Sunday, Feb. 14).
