AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College men's tennis player
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for matches played April 4-10. The official announcement came via the league's weekly men's tennis report released this afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y.
LeMar, a 5-foot-7 redshirt-freshman, helped Daemen go 2-1 in the team's three dual-matches, all of which came on the road this past weekend. Personally, LeMar went 2-1 in singles play and added one doubles victory as well. He becomes the first Rookie of the Week recipient from Daemen since teammate
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), now a sophomore, was recognized in mid-February of 2015.
LeMar's first singles win of the week came in Daemen's 6-1 defeat of Coppin State University on Friday, April 8. He won 6-3, 6-4 in third singles over CSU's Gavin Lewis, and added a doubles victory while teaming with senior
Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) - a 6-4 triumph in third doubles over the Eagles' Ross Olexa and Zaipo Oula. The dual-match win for the Wildcats snapped a 13-match slide and it marked the program's first-ever defeat of an NCAA Division I opponent.
LeMar closed out the week with a near whitewash (6-0, 6-1) of Chandat Phan from University of the Sciences. The win, which came in fourth singles, proved pivotal in what ended up being a 5-4 victory for the Wildcats in the dual-match, snapping a string of seven consecutive losses in matches decided by three points or less.
For the season, LeMar is 10-16 in singles play, ranking second on the team in singles victories behind Veitengruber's 12. He's also teamed with multiple partners to go 8-16 in doubles play thus far, and is tied for second on the squad in doubles wins.
LeMar and the Wildcats (4-15 overall, 0-3 ECC) play host to ECC favorite N.Y. Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 16 in their only match of this week.
