AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College men's tennis player
Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for matches played April 18-24. The official announcement came via the league's weekly men's tennis report released yesterday afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y. It's the second time in the last three weeks that the Wildcat greenhorn has earned the weekly accolade.
LeMar, a 5-foot-7 redshirt-freshman, helped Daemen split a pair of dual matches in the team's final contests of the season, defeating Millersville University 9-0 on April 18, before falling to rival Roberts Wesleyan College 6-3 on April 20. Personally, LeMar went 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play.
LeMar's first singles win of the week came against MU's Christian Akerely. LeMar was impressive in the third singles win, downing Akerely 6-4, 6-0. He paired with freshman
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) to defeat MU's Anthony Jadus and David Yunginger in third doubles as well, in what ended up being the Wildcats' first-ever shutout of an NCAA Division II opponent.
LeMar went on to defeat RWC's Rene Torti in fourth singles, 6-4, 6-1, in last Wednesday's season finale.
For the season, LeMar went 12-17 in singles play. His 12 singles wins rank second all-time for a single season behind teammate
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) who totaled 13 singles wins this season. LeMar added nine doubles victories as well this season. He was previously named ECC Rookie of the Week for
matches played April 4-10.
LeMar and the Wildcats concluded the season by winning three of their final five dual matches to wind up at 5-17 overall.
