Roginson, VanDeMortel Earn Scholar-Athlete Honors From ECC

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College's Kevin Roginson (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) has been named the East Coast Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) was also honored as the Co-Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  The announcement was made earlier this week at the ECC Awards Dinner held at the John J. Cox Student Center on the campus of the University of Bridgeport, as the conference named Scholar-Athletes of the Year for all of its sponsored sports.  The awards take into account both academic and athletic performance during the 2015-16 academic year.

"I am extremely proud Kevin and Matt for the hard work they've put in this year, both on the track and in the classroom.  This is a fitting way for each of them to closeout the 2015-16 season," said first-year head coach Paul Lagno.  "Both Kevin and Matt represent the best attributes that we look for in our student-athletes here at Daemen.  Both are great ambassadors for our program and for the College as a whole."

Roginson, a 5-foot-10 sophomore long distance runner, was a second-team All-ECC performer during the indoor track season, finishing fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:04.78 at the ECC championship meet in late February.  In the classroom, the Global and Local Sustainability major holds a 3.51 grade-point average.

VanDeMortel is a 5-foot-10 junior who specializes in middle distance races.  He won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.55 at the ECC championship meet to earn first-team All-ECC honors for the outdoor track season.  He additionally earned second-team All-ECC honors as part of Daemen's 4 x 800 meter relay team.  In the classroom, VanDeMortel carries a 3.65 grade-point-average as a Physician Assistant major.  He shared Scholar Athlete of the Year honors with Skandal Delince of Queens College.
