AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's cross country and track and field programs will get a boost with the addition of three incoming freshmen as Morgan Munger (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama), Leana Wiebelt (East Setauket, N.Y./Suffolk County CC) and local product Julia Gaeta (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West) each recently signed a National Letter of Intent, announced today by Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach
Paul Lagno. The trio will enroll and classes and begin competing for the Wildcats during the upcoming Fall 2016 semester.
Munger comes to Daemen after earning a combined 10 varsity letters in cross country and outdoor track and field as a member of the Oakfield-Alabama Hornets. A three-time honorable-mention All-Greater Rochester selection in cross country, Munger finished as the runner-up at the Section V Class D championship meet as a junior and went on to compete at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Class D championship meet. In addition, she earned four varsity letters for swimming during her scholastic career.
A N.Y. State Scholar-Athlete, Munger will major in Physical Therapy at Daemen, and she'll compete in both cross country and track and field, joining fellow Oakfield-Alabama product
Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) who enters her fourth year as a member of the Wildcats' programs.
Wiebelt will also compete on the track and in cross country for Daemen after completing a brilliant two-year career for the Suffolk County Community College Sharks where she twice earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III All-America honors for cross country, in addition to being a two-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week. On the track, Wiebelt also picked up All-America honors as a freshman as part of the Sharks' 4x800 meter relay team, while also placing sixth in the 5,000-meter run and fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NJCAA national championship meet. This past season, Wiebelt earned All-America status in the 10,000-meter run.
The 2015-16 season was a remarkable one for Wiebelt as she helped the Sharks capture NJCAA Division III national championships in both cross country and outdoor track and field. She leaves as the school's record-holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 10,000-meter run.
Wiebelt is also a 2014 graduate of Ward Melville High School where she earned a combined nine varsity letters in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field, and was a N.Y. State Scholar-Athlete. She will major in Health Care Studies at Daemen, with a specialization in Health and Fitness Training.
Rounding out the trio is another N.Y. State Scholar-Athlete in Gaeta who will compete on the Wildcats' cross country squad. She comes to Daemen after earning second-team All-Niagara Frontier League honors for the Kenmore West Blue Devils last fall to cap a solid three-year varsity career. In addition to her time running for coach Joe Catalano, Gaeta earned two varsity letters in basketball and four in outdoor track and field.
An Honor Roll student, Gaeta will major in Athletic Training at Daemen.
"I'm extremely excited about our incoming class on the women's side," said Lagno who recently completed his first year at the helm of Daemen's programs. "Leana is a multiple time All-American at the junior college level who should be competing for a top-five position on our team right away. Morgan and Julia will provide some much needed depth for us, and both of them will have some big shoes to fill once our current juniors and seniors move on."
Munger, Wiebelt and Gaeta join previously announced signees
Shania LiVecchi (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) and
Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) in Lagno's combined cross country/track and field recruiting class for 2016.
The Daemen College women's cross country team is coming off a 2015 season in which they finished as runners-up at the East Coast Conference Championships, while also taking fourth place at the NCAA Division II East Region Championships. The Wildcats' indoor track and field team finished tied for fourth at the ECC Championships in February, and followed up during the outdoor season with a fifth-place finish at the conference championship meet in April.
