Borges Named To NABC Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Daemen College men's basketball player Alex Borges (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, recognizing his academic achievement during the 2015-16 academic year.

Borges, academically classified as a junior in 2015-16, is a Pre-Med major.  He met the high standard of academic criteria to be considered for the NABC Honors Court, which is as follows:

1. Academically, a junior or senior, and a varsity player
2. Cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2015-16  academic year
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution
4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II or III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach

On the court, Borges appeared in 28 of the Wildcats' 29 games this past season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in 9.8 minutes per game.  He scored a season-high eight points in a 97-80 win at Dowling College on December 18, and went on to make his first career start in a 100-86 win at Mercy College on February 13.  Over the course of his career, Borges has appeared in 72 games while helping Daemen to an overall record of 61-27 in the last three years.

"This is a tremendous honor for Alex, and one that he certainly worked hard to achieve," said Daemen head coach Mike MacDonald.  "Being a high-achiever in the classroom is not easy, especially for someone like Alex who aspires to be a doctor someday.  Given the difficulty of the coursework, and the demands that studying and being an athlete put on his time, Alex deseves to be commended for his efforts."

Borges' selection to the NABC Honors Court marks the fourth straight year that the Wildcats have been represented.  Previous Honors Court selections include Arif Mehmetaj (Jamaica, N.Y./SUNY Delhi) in 2014-15, and Aaron Davis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Troy Nowak (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) who each earned the accolade in 2012-13 and 2013-14.
