FLUSHING, N.Y. – Seniors Madison and MacKenzie Rowland (Albany, N.Y.) combined for 49 points, 25 rebounds, 16 assists, five blocks and seven steals to lead Queens College to a 75-40 victory over Daemen College here tonight in East Coast Conference women's basketball play.
Queens, the unanimous pre-season choice to win its third-straight ECC title, ran its winning streak to five-straight games and improved to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the league. The Knights, who remained atop the ECC standings, entered the game ranked 23rd nationally and third regionally among Division II teams. Daemen, which remained winless (0-7) all-time against Queens, dropped to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the ECC.
Senior Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) returned to the lineup for Daemen after missing the last two games due to injury and totaled 11 points in 19 minutes of action. Freshman Sydney Jones (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes) added seven points off the bench for the Wildcats, while junior Liz Miles (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) chipped in four points and a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) failed to score in double figures for just the second time this season and finished with six points and three blocks.
Madison Rowland, a two-time all-America and three-time first-team All-ECC selection, played 36 minutes and registered a triple-double with 19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. She entered the game just six points shy of 2,000 for her career and became just the fourth women's basketball player in conference history to reach the 2,000-point plateau. MacKenzie Rowland played 38 minutes and finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Junior Merrick Rowland (Albany, N.Y.) also contributed with 11 points and three assists in 35 minutes of action.
Queens held a 10-7 lead with just under four minutes left in the first quarter when a layup by MacKenzie Rowland sparked the hosts on an 8-0 run. A putback by MacKenzie Rowland with 1:37 left in the quarter capped the spurt and gave the Knights an 18-7 lead. Daemen outscored the Knights, 7-2, the rest of the frame and Queens took a 20-15 lead into the second quarter.
Queens took control once again with a 10-0 run over the first 4:30 of the second quarter. A layup by junior Melissa Fumano (Syracuse, N.Y) capped the run and gave Queens a 30-15 lead. Daemen cut the lead to 11 following a jumper by Saba and a layup by freshman Carina Pringle (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena), but Madison Rowland answered with a three-pointer and the hosts closed out the first-half scoring after Merrick Rowland drained a triple to give Queens a 43-23 halftime edge.
The lead ballooned to 30 points, 57-27, following a layup by MacKenzie Rowland with just under four minutes to play in the third quarter, and Daemen came no closer than 28 points the rest of the way.
Daemen shot a season-low 26-percent (15-for-57) from the field overall and made just 1-of-19 three-point attempts. Queens shot 58-percent (15-for-26) from the field in the second half and went 33-for-64 (52%) from the field overall. The Knights connected on 3-of-10 from downtown. The teams attempted a combined 17 free throws in the contest. Daemen was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe, while QC went 6-for-8.
Queens posted a commanding 45-29 edge in total rebounds and the hosts also finished with a 46-16 advantage in points-in-the-paint.
Daemen plays its third-straight regionally-ranked opponent Saturday (Jan. 14) when it travels to Molloy College for a league tilt.
