Redband Named ECC Rookie of the Week For Second Time

Redshirt-Freshman Helped Daemen To A Split Of Two ECC Road Games Last Week

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College men's basketball player Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for games played from January 9-15.  The official announcement was made via the league's weekly men's basketball report which was released late yesterday afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y.

Redband, a 6-foot-7 redshirt-freshman forward, averaged 10.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in two contests last week, while also shooting 46.7 percent from three-point range (7-for-15).  Redband's efforts helped Daemen split a pair of ECC road games, defeating Queens College 75-62 on Jan. 11 before losing on a buzzer-beater at Molloy College (78-75) on Jan. 14.

Redband opened the week by scoring nine points on 3-of-7 long-range shooting in the win at Queens.  He added three rebounds, two assists and a block as well.  The victory extended Daemen's ECC winning streak to four straight games dating back to mid-December, and it snapped the Wildcats' two game skid in games played at QC's Fitzgerald Gymnasium, giving them their first win there since Dec. 22, 2013.

Later in the week, Redband connected on 4-of-8 shots from three-point range and totaled 12 points in the gut-wrenching loss at Molloy.  His triple at the 7:52 mark gave Daemen its largest lead of the game (65-57) as they came back from a 12-point first-half deficit.  The production from three-point range marked the ninth time this season that Redband has made at least three shots from three-point land, including doing so in six of the last eight games.

For the season, Redband has started all 16 contests thus far, and is producing 10.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game with a team-high 14 blocked shots.  His 44 three-point baskets leads the team and ranks in a tie for second among the ECC leaders.  Redband is shooting 45.7 percent from the field (64-for-140) and 44.4 percent from behind the arc (44-for-99). He also leads all ECC freshmen in scoring.

The announcement marked the second time this season that Redband has earned ECC Rookie of the Week honors.  He previously earned the accolade for games played from November 21-27 when he averaged 13.7 points over three contests, helping Daemen to a 2-1 record that week.  The Wildcats led the league in Rookie of the Week selections last season with six.  Guard Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena), who is out for the entire 2016-17 season with an injury, was a four-time recipient, and Deion Hamilton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) earned the honor twice.

Redband and the Wildcats continue ECC play tonight when they host their long-time rivals from Roberts Wesleyan College.  The Wildcats are looking for their 11th consecutive win in the series with tip-off slated for 8 p.m. at Lumsden Gymnasium.
