For Communications Three-Point Shooting Keys Daemen Win Over LIU Post Wildcats Race Out To 30-Point Lead, Coast To 13th Win Of Season AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's basketball team came out hotter than a pistol tonight, canning nine of their first 12 attempts from three-point range en route to an 88-66 victory over Long Island University Post in East Coast Conference play at Lumsden Gymnasium. Buoyed by redshirt-freshman Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) and redshirt-senior Supreme Hannah (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge), Daemen opened up a 39-9 lead after just 12 minutes of action, ultimately coasting to the team's eighth win in the last 10 contests.  Redband and Hannah combined for seven of Daemen's nine triples in the game-opening run. The win pushes Daemen to 13-6 overall and 7-4 in league play this season as the Wildcats avenged a 73-70 overtime loss at LIU Post earlier this season.  The Wildcats have won seven of their last eight ECC contests, and the victory tonight also makes Daemen 11-1 on home court this season (67-9 since the start of the 2011-12 season; 31-5 in ECC games since joining the league in 2013-14).  It was Daemen's third win in the last eight days, averaging 91 points per game in those outings. LIU Post, which was picked second in the ECC preseason poll, continued on a downward trajectory with their fifth consecutive defeat, falling to 5-15 overall and 4-6 in the league.  The Pioneers, who have made nine consecutive ECC Tournament appearances while averaging 21.4 wins per season in that span, played without a trio of top players tonight as starters Jemal Mosley (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Richard Altenord (Dix Hills, N.Y.), and key reserve Hall Elisias (Valley Stream, N.Y.) all missed the game with injuries. Redband, the two-time reigning ECC Rookie of the Week, finished with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.  The 6-foot-7 forward scored 14 consecutive points by himself in a little over two minutes of action in the first half.  He canned four consecutive three-pointers, beginning at the 15:43 mark.  His fast-break layup at the 13:27 mark concluded his personal run and made the score 26-4 in favor of the Wildcats. Hannah finished with 18 points - his 12th consecutive game in double figures.  He shot 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from long distance, while adding a game-high five assists and four rebounds.  With 251 career assists, he's now 19 shy of moving into the top-10 all-time at Daemen in the category. Not to be left out, redshirt-senior forward Arif Mehmetaj (Jamaica, N.Y./SUNY Delhi) matched Hannah with 18 points while adding two blocks in just 19 minutes of action.  Mehmetaj, who recorded his 700th point in a Daemen uniform this evening, hit 3-of-6 from three-point range.  He's now averaging 17.7 points and shooting 55.1 percent from the field in seven games this month. Redshirt-sophomore wing Deion Hamilton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) chipped in with 10 points and three steals off the Wildcat bench. Senior forward Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.) posted a double-double (21 points, 12 rebounds) to pace the Pioneers.  Fellow senior Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) added 13 points, five boards and five assists to the LIU Post cause, but committed eight turnovers in the game as well. After falling behind by 30 points, LIU Post outscored Daemen 18-6 over the final eight minutes of the first half as Daemen cooled off from its blistering start.  The Wildcats took a 45-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Any thoughts of a Pioneer comeback were squelched over the first 12 minutes of the second half as Daemen ran the gap back to as many as 32 points.  Redband converted an old-fashioned three-point play and connected on his fifth three-pointer of the game during an 18-5 spurt which made the score 74-42 with 8:21 to play. The lead bounced around between the lower 30's and upper 20's for much of the remainder of the contest, until LIU Post's Nabil Keyro (Union City, Calif.) hit back-to-back trifectas in the final minute to bring it back to a 22-point margin at game's end. Daemen, which leads the ECC in three-point field goals this season, matched a season-high with 15 triples on 32 attempts today (46.9 percent).  The Wildcats are now 7-2 this season when making at least 10 three-pointers, something they've accomplished in five of the last six outings. Overall, Daemen shot 50.8 percent from the field, hitting better than half their attempts for the third straight game.  The Wildcats enjoyed a 14-6 advantage in fast-break scoring while also turning 18 LIU Post turnovers into 25 points. The Pioneers were limited to just 32.8 percent shooting (21-for-64) while becoming the eighth team this season to be held under 70 points at Lumsden Gymnasium.  The multitude of missed field goals resulted 21 offensive rebounds for the guests which they turned into a 17-2 advantage in second-chance points. Daemen hits the road this weekend to face Mercy College in another ECC matchup.  The Wildcats will be looking for the season sweep of the Mavs after knocking them off by 12 points (76-64) at home earlier this month.  Tip-off Saturday is slated for 2:30 p.m. at the Westchester Community College Gymnasium.Print Friendly Version
