Women's Soccer 10/2/2017 3:50:00 PM Mike Miranto, Associate A.D. For Communications Flores Named ECC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week AMHERST, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played from September 25 through October 1. The official announcement was made via the league's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y. In her only action of the week, Flores made a career-high 11 saves to lead Daemen to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College last Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Karrer Field. Seven of Flores' saves came in the pivotal second half, including three after the Wildcats had taken the lead on Jamie Boyar's (Williamsville, N.Y.) in the 60th minute. Flores came off the goal line and made a save on GBC's Taylor Owen at the 59:12 mark which ignited an attacking opportunity that resulted in Boyar's go-ahead tally 20 seconds later. Goldey-Beacom generated a 27-9 advantage in shot attempts, but Flores stood tall, continuing the solid play that Daemen has gotten from its goalkeepers this season. Flores' performance marked the second double-figure save total for a Daemen goalkeeper this season, matching classmate Katelin White's (Lewiston, N.Y.) total from a 2-0 shutout of Tiffin University on Sept. 10. The win over Goldey-Beacom pushed Daemen to 5-2-1 on the season, surpassing the team's win total from all of the 2016 season when the Wildcats went 4-10-2. It also knocked GBC from the ranks of the unbeaten; the Lightning had entered the contest as winners of four-straight games and sporting a 6-0-1 record this season. Daemen went on to drop a 4-2 decision in league play Saturday, Sept. 30 at N.Y. Institute of Technology. Flores did not play in the contest. The announcement today marked the second-straight week that Flores has earned a weekly accolade from the league office. After making six saves and registering a shutout in her first career start, a 1-0 (2OT) win at Clarion University on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Flores was named the ECC Rookie of the Week for Sept. 18-24. Both Flores and White have now earned both Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors from the league this season. Overall, Daemen players have garnered five weekly honors this season, the team's most since joining the league back in 2013. Together, the Flores-White goalkeeping duo has combined to post a 1.37 goals-against average which currently ranks fifth in the nine-team ECC. Flores owns a 2-1-0 goalkeeping record with a 1.13 goals-against average. She's made 18 total saves and holds a .857 save percentage. Flores and the Wildcats are back in action with an East Coast Conference home game Wednesday, Oct. 4 vs. longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College.
