The New Year's Eve matinee was held at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium in the State Capital today. Daemen, which was coming off a disappointing 83-82 loss to St. Michael's College just 24 hours earlier, improved to 6-6 on the season, and to 4-4 all-time vs. Northeast-10 Conference opponents with today's win. The Wildcats the Golden Knights their first loss at home this season, and only their sixth defeat over the last three seasons (28-6) at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. St. Rose, ranked No. 9 in the latest D2SIDA East Region poll, fell to 9-4 overall and faced their first setback after winning three-straight. Redshir freshman Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) put on a spectacular performance while making the first start of his career, shooting a scorching 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the floor for a game-high 22 points. The big man was unstoppable down low, ripping down seven rebounds, adding two assists and one monstrous dunk in the Wildcat win. The rookie center has now gone over 20 points in three of the last four games, shooting a stellar 74.5 percent from the field and averaging 20.5 points over those four contests. Redshirt sophomore guard Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y.) was instrumental in Daemen's overthrow of the regionally-ranked Golden Knights. Sarkis totaled 19 points, 11 of which came in the second half. The sharpshooter connected on 8-of-11 from the field (72.7%) and 3-of-6 (50%) from beyond the three-point arc. Sarkis has now netted three three-pointers in four of the team's 12 games. The Wildcat playmaker dished out a team-high three assists and added five rebounds. Junior guard Darius Garvin (Elmira, N.Y.) logged 39 minutes of action, pulling down a team-high eight boards and totaling 12 points. Sophomore guard Breon Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) registered a career-high eight points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor. Harris not only drained his first three-point basket of the season, but he nailed two big treys for the Wildcats today. The two squads found themselves tied 12-12 after trading baskets in the opening ten minutes of action. Harris sparked a 7-0 Daemen spurt after burying his first three-pointer. The Wildcats took a 19-12 lead at the 8:15 mark, after a jumper from Garvin followed by a layup from the big man Sischo. The Golden Knights were unable to catch the visitors and Daemen headed into the locker room with a 34-30 advantage. At the half Sischo paced the way with 12 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field (66.7%), while Garvin netted nine points and hauled down five rebounds in the first 20 minutes. The Wildcats roared out of the locker room in the second half, using a seven-point run to build their lead 39-32 with 17:13 left in regulation. As expected, the Golden Knights made their run and took a one-point lead (43-42) at the 12:22 mark, but four points from Sischo and a big-time three-pointer from Garvin gave the Wildcats a 49-43 advantage. St. Rose went cold in the second half, shooting a dismal 1-of-12 from three-point range and was unable to catch the win-hungry Wildcats. Daemen held the Golden Knights scoreless for three of the final five minutes to seal the deal and enter 2018 with a big 68-60 triumph.
