Fundraiser To Benefit Juvenile Diabetes Foundation A Success

4733AMHERST, N.Y. - On Saturday, February 18, the Daemen College Athletic Department hosted a fundraising event in conjunction with a men's and women's basketball doubleheader which raised nearly $1,100 to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), a leading global organization which is focused on curing Type 1 Diabetes.

The event was planned and conducted by the College's JDRF Committee: Brenda Rosen, student life office manager; Adriane Williams, associate director of academic advisement and first year initiatives; Don Phillips, director of physical plant; and Steve Chmielewski, grant administrator.  A basket raffle was available in the Lumsden Gymnasium lobby, and 50/50 raffles were conducted inside the gymnasium itself as the games were being played on the court.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease which prohibits the body from producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.  The disease affects more than 29 million Americans, including one million children.  The mission of JDRF is accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat Type 1 Diabetes and its complications.

The Western New York chapter of JDRF is located at 331 Alberta Drive in Amherst.  For more information, including ways you can make an impact in the fight to cure Type 1 Diabetes, visit jdrf.org.
