Roginson & Donahue Named All-Region By USTFCCCA

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College indoor track and field athletes Kevin Roginson (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) have been named 2017 NCAA Division II All-East Region honorees by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  The top-five individuals in each event from each of the eight regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West) earned the All-Region distinction, and the official announcement was made in a press release from USTFCCCA headquarters in New Orleans, La. this afternoon.

Roginson, a 5-foot-10 junior, was named to the All-Region team for the 5,000-meter run.  His top time (14:57.20) in the event this season came at the Boston University Season Opener meet back on Dec. 3 when he became the first Daemen athlete to run a sub-15-minute time at that distance.  As the lone Division II athlete in the field, Roginson finished 18th out of 27 competitors in the race, and his time shaved a whopping 50 seconds off the previous record (15:47.38) which was set last season by the now-graduated Jeremy Rushok.

Roginson went on to win the 5,000-meter race at last week's East Coast Conference Championship meet held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.  He posted a time of 15:45.21 to set a new ECC Championship meet record, surpassing the previous mark (15:46.78) set by Enock Bor of Roberts Wesleyan College in 2014.

Donahue, a 5-foot-2 senior, earned the All-Region accolade in three events - the 1-mile, 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs - all of which she set new team records in this season.  Among the records set was her 5:05.54 time in the 1-mile run, winning the event at the Brockport Multi and Invitational on Jan. 28.  It was the second time in as many weeks that Donahue had bested the team record at that distance, doing so first at the Highlander Invitational (Jan. 20) with a time of 5:11.99 in a race that she also won.

She went on to win the 3,000-meter race at the Robert J. Kane Invitational hosted by Cornell University on Feb. 12.  Donahue crossed the finish line with a record-setting time of 10:04.21, surpassing her own record which she had set last season.  Donahue would add another first-place finish at this distance at last week's conference championship meet, surpassing her own meet record with a time of 10:10.71.

Donahue's top time in the 5,000-meter run also came at the ECC Championship meet.  She won the race with a time of 17:00.75, shaving 30 seconds off the meet record she set in the event last season, and 15 seconds off her previous team record in the event.

Today's announcement marks the second-straight season that Donahue has been named an All-Region honoree.
