Women's Cross Country Places Six On USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

AMHERST, N.Y. - Six student-athletes from the Daemen College women's cross country team have been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for NCAA Division II as announced today from that organization's headquarters in New Orleans, La.  The Daemen honorees were graduate student Ashley Cheff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls), seniors Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora), Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) and Hannah Rice (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora), junior Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) and redshirt-sophomore Rebekah Zee (East Aurora, N.Y./Slippery Rock University).

The All-Academic honors were awarded to those athletes who have compiled a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 and finished among the top 30 percent of eligible runners at their respective regional championships and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA Championships.

The six Daemen athletes helped the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish in the team standings as the East Region Championship meet at the Hopkinton (N.H.) Fairgrounds last fall (Nov. 5), while also continuing to excel in the classroom.

The group was undoubtedly led by Donahue who completed a stellar four-year career by finishing 10th at the regional championship meet, earning All-East Region honors for the second consecutive year.  It marked the 19th top-10 finish of her career (in 25 career races), and the 22nd time she came in as Daemen's top finisher.  Donahue, who became Daemen's first-ever NCAA Division II National Championships qualifier in 2015, is a Health Promotion major.

Trabert (30th place), Rice (42nd place), Cheff (43rd place) and Zee (44th place) all finished in the top-50 at the regional championship meet.  Trabert is majoring in Social Work; Rice is majoring in Nursing; Cheff, who has already completed her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, is pursuing a Master's in Public Health; and Zee is a Biology major.  Denton, a Physical Therapy major, finished in 79th place.
