Wilde Named ECC Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College men's tennis player Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for matches held February 27 through March 5.  The official announcement was made via the league's weekly men's tennis report which was released this evening from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y.

Wilde, a 5-foot-8 freshman, helped Daemen snap a five-match skid with a 9-0 shutout of Millersville University on March 5.  Wilde picked up points in both singles and doubles action as the Wildcats (3-11 overall record this season) earned their first shutout since the penultimate dual match of last season (April 18, 2016) which also came against Millersville.

The German native teamed with veteran Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) at the top of Daemen's doubles lineup to win 8-2 over MU's Christian Akerley and Christian Boyer.  He went on to defeat Boyer in straight sets (6-4, 7-6) as they met in the third singles position.  The results give Wilde six doubles wins and four singles wins this season, ranking second on the team in both.

Today's announcement gives Daemen three of the last five ECC Rookie of the Week selections dating back to the end of the 2015-16 season.  Teammate Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), now a red-shirt sophomore, earned the honor twice in the final three weeks last season.

In addition, senior John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) was named to the ECC's weekly honor roll.  Teaming with his brother Andrew in the third doubles position, the pair took down MU's Dylan Wagner and Adam Kopitsky by an 8-2 final, giving John his fifth doubles win of the season and the 31st of his career to break the program's all-time record (30) which was set by Gregory Lower from 2012-16.

Daemen is idle this week.  The Wildcats return to action against Division III Franklin College on Monday, March 13.
