Boyar Named 2016-17 Female Newcomer of the Year

AMHERST, N.Y. - Freshman Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) of the Daemen College women's soccer team has been named the College's 2016-17 Female Newcomer of the Year.  The announcement was made at the Daemen ESPY's, the Athletic Department's end of the year awards gala held in Lumsden Gymnasium this evening, and the award was presented by alumnus and former Daemen basketball player Monica Kosior.

Boyar, a 5-foot-2 forward, made an immediate impact in her first collegiate season last fall.  She was one of only three players to start all 16 contests, ending the season as the Wildcats' leader in goals (6), assists (4), points (16), shots (38) and shots on goal (19).  She became the first freshman to lead the team in goals and points since Alicia Vasiloff (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) did so with eight goals and 16 points in 2008.  Boyar's goal and point totals were the most for a Daemen freshman since Kim Obermeier (Depew, N.Y./Depew) scored nine times and posted 21 points in 2012.

Boyar registered her first collegiate point when she assisted on Alex Juliano's (Hamburg, N.Y./Nardin) overtime goal in the 95th minute to deliver a 2-1 victory at the University of Findlay on September 10.

Four days later she got on the board herself for the first time, scoring Daemen's lone goal in a 1-1 (2OT) tie with Mansfield University in the Wildcats' 2016 home opener.  Later that week, Boyar put Daemen ahead 1-0 during an eventual 3-1 win over East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas College.  With two goals, she was named the ECC Rookie of the Week for September 12-18.

In a 2-1 non-conference loss at St. Michael's College on October 8, Boyar registered her fourth consecutive game with at least 90 minutes of action.  After going to the locker room trailing 2-0, Boyar cut the deficit in half in the 60th minute with her third marker of the season.

Three days later at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Boyar posted the first multi-goal game of her career, scoring twice while adding an assist for a five-point afternoon.  She put Daemen on the board in the 30th minute after taking a pass through UPJ defenders from sophomore back Alex Valenti (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence).  Later, with the game tied 1-1, Boyar's crossing feed to the top of the box was finished by classmate Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont./Paris District) in the 61st minute.  She later added an insurance tally, her fifth of the season, on a breakaway in the 89th minute.

Boyar went on to notch a goal and an assist in a 7-3 loss to nationally-ranked University of Bridgeport, a team that went on to advance to the national quarterfinals.

Daemen finished 4-10-2 overall, including a 3-3-2 mark in games that Boyar registered a goal or assist.

Boyar becomes the first-ever recipient of the College's newly instituted Female Newcomer of the Year Award.  Nominations for the award are made by Office of Athletic Communications and nominees are then voted on by the department's head coaches and other full-time staffers.  Additional nominees this year included basketball player Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata), volleyball player Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y./Stony Brook University), bowler Rachel Steele (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) and cross country runner Rebekah Zee (East Aurora, N.Y./Slippery Rock University).
