General 4/28/2017 10:18:00 PM Mike Miranto, Associate A.D. For Communications Redband Named 2016-17 Male Newcomer of the Year AMHERST, N.Y. - Red-shirt freshman Jeff Redband (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) of the Daemen College men's basketball team has been named the College's 2016-17 Male Newcomer of the Year. The announcement was made at the Daemen ESPY's, the Athletic Department's end of the year awards gala held in Lumsden Gymnasium this evening, and the award was presented by alumnus and former Daemen basketball player Monica Kosior. Redband, a 6-foot-7 forward, made an immediate impact in his first collegiate season for the Wildcats this past winter. Redband appeared in all 28 games, making 27 starts and helping Daemen to a 19-9 campaign - the program's sixth consecutive season with at least 18 wins - and a second-straight East Coast Conference Tournament berth. A four-time ECC Rookie of the Week honoree, Redband contributed 10.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range. The long and lanky sharp-shooter did the majority of his damage from behind the three-point line, becoming the first Daemen freshman to sink at least 50 three-pointers since Brian Montanaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) canned 70 during the 2002-03 season. Redband's 68 three-point field goals led the Wildcats and ranked third among all ECC players. He made at least one three-pointer in 23 games, and knocked down multiple triples 17 times. Redband also ranked fifth in the league in three-point field goal percentage, and second among ECC freshmen in scoring. Redband's shooting acumen was on display early and often. He canned six three-pointers, one of which forged a 72-72 tie with 26 seconds to go in an exhibition tilt with Division I University at Buffalo on November 4. Redband's 22 points led the Wildcats in what turned out to be a five-point overtime loss (87-82) against the defending Mid-American Conference champs. He would pick up his first Rookie of the Week selection shortly thereafter, helping Daemen to a 2-1 record in games played November 21-27. Redband played a key role with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting (6-of-10 from three-point range) during a 90-79 road win at Edinboro University that week, delivering head coach Mike MacDonald the 300th victory of his career. From December 10 through January 28, Redband caught fire consistently, shooting 42-for-74 (56.8 percent) from long distance and making at least one three-pointer in all 14 games during that span. He scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point land, in an 88-66 rout of Long Island University Post at Lumsden Gymnasium on January 25. The greenhorn scored 14 consecutive points during a game-opening 39-9 run that put the Wildcats in the driver's seat from the outset. Redband would garner three-straight Rookie of the Week selections during the month of January. As the regular season concluded, Daemen clinched the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament. Redband recorded his 14th double-figure scoring game of the season with 11 points while grabbing seven rebounds and playing a season-high 35 minutes in the Wildcats' 73-71 opening-round victory over fifth-seeded University of the District of Columbia. The win propelled Daemen into the ECC Tournament semifinals where their season ended at the hands of eventual tournament champion St. Thomas Aquinas College. Redband becomes the first-ever recipient of the College's newly instituted Male Newcomer of the Year Award. Nominations for the award are made by Office of Athletic Communications and nominees are then voted on by the department's head coaches and other full-time staffers. Additional nominees this year included cross country/track and field athlete Josh Bodnar (Fillmore, N.Y./Fillmore) and tennis athletes Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College).
