The official announcement was made via the league's weekly track and field report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y. Laird, a 5-foot-11 junior, finished second out of 37 competitors in the javelin throw at the Geneseo Early Spring Invitational on April 2. Laird's heave of 49.10 meters eclipsed his own school record of 46.72 meters. A versatile athlete who competes in throwing, sprinting and jumping events, Laird went on to add a 16th-place finish in the shot put competition with a throw of 12.24 meters at Geneseo as well. Laird becomes the third Daemen player to earn Field Athlete of the Week honors, and the first since former Wildcat Nick Marlin (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) did so during the 2015 season. In addition, junior long distance Kevin Roginson (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) was named the ECC's weekly honor roll. Roginson placed third out of 44 entrants in the 5,000-meter run at Geneseo, crossing the finish line in 15:23.41 to establish a new school record in the event. Laird, Roginson and their Daemen teammates return to action at the ROC City Classic hosted by Nazareth College on Saturday, April 8.
