Metz Appointed To USA Triathlon National Coaching Commission

AMHERST, N.Y. - Dr. Jon Metz, head women's triathlon coach at Daemen College, has been appointed to the USA Triathlon National Coaching Commission, an advisory board of certified triathlon coaches which works with the Coach Development Senior Manager and USA Triathlon staff to further enhance the organization's coaching certification and education programs.

Dr. Metz, who has presided over the development of the women's triathlon team at Daemen since its inception in 2015, holds a pair of coaching certifications from USA Triathlon (Level II Coach; Youth and Junior Certified Coach).  A well-respected figure in the triathlon community, Dr. Metz has previously served as the Youth Coordinator on the USA Triathlon Northeast Regional Council, and has published articles relating to triathlon training for the Performance Coaching Newsletter.  He will fill one of the three open vacancies on the National Coaching Commission.

"It has long been my belief that many coaches understand the 'what' but don't know the most effective way the deliver the 'why' and 'how' because they have never been instructed or exposed to the intricacies of teaching and learning," said Dr. Metz, who also holds a doctorate (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from D'Youville College.  "I am excited for the opportunity to help coaches understand and apply teaching skills to better connect with their athletes. I am looking forward to making a positive contribution to the mission of the National Coaches Commission by helping the coaching accreditation team at USA Triathlon take coaching to the next level."

Dr. Metz will be the second collegiate coach to currently sit on the National Coaching Commission, joining Tim Edwards, chair of the commission, who serves as the head coach at Cleveland State University.  In addition to his coaching duties at Daemen, Dr. Metz is the president and CEO of TriVault, a company which provides coaching services for tri-athletes of all ages and abilities.

The sport of triathlon, which combines running, swimming and cycling into a race-style event, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 13 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.
