Daemen Recognized For Charitable Fundraising Efforts With ECC Cares Award

AMHERST, N.Y. – On Monday, May 22, the Daemen College athletic department was named the 2016-17 East Coast Conference Cares Award recipient, recognizing the department's fundraising efforts for charitable causes.  The award was presented at the annual East Coast Conference Awards Dinner held at the John J. Cox Student Center on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.

The ECC Cares Award is presented to the institution that raises the most money for collective community causes per student-athlete throughout the academic year.  Through two leading fundraising events, Coaches v. Cancer and Relay for Life, Daemen Athletics raised over $9,000 for causes this year.  In addition to being awarded a plaque to commemorate the achievement, Daemen will receive a $500 grant from the conference to be used during the 2017-18 academic year.

For the inaugural Relay for Life event put on by the Daemen College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Daemen students came together to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  The American Cancer Society was also the beneficiary of additional funds raised through Daemen's Coaches vs. Cancer night which was run in collaboration with a men's and women's basketball home doubleheader at Lumsden Gymnasium.  Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Associate of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Daemen's intercollegiate athletic teams participated in numerous community outreach initiatives, and contributed hundreds of hours of community service throughout the 2016-17 academic year.  Connecting with the community is seen as mutually beneficial to the Daemen athletic department, and the eagerness to engage and give back to the community is a common desire among Daemen's nearly 200 student-athletes.
