Drzymala Named ECC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete Of The Year

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College student-athlete Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) has been named the East Coast Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  The official announcement of the ECC's Scholar-Athletes of the Year in all sports sponsored by the league was made at the annual ECC Awards Dinner held this past Monday, May 22 at the John J. Cox Student Center on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.

To be considered for the award, nominated student-athletes from the league's 10 member and seven associate member schools must achieve a minimum grade-point average of 3.30 (on a 4.00 scale), must have been a starter or key reserve for their respective team and they must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution.

A Business Administration major, Drzymala walked the stage at Daemen's commencement ceremony last weekend after earning six Dean's List honors during her academic career on Main Street.

Athletically, Drzymala rounded out a fantastic career on the court this past fall, leading Daemen to its most successful season as an NCAA Division II member.  Drzymala helped the team finish with a 25-8 record while capturing its first ECC regular-season championship and NCAA Tournament berth, as well as runner-up finishes in both the ECC Tournament and the East Regional portion of the NCAA Tournament.  A two-time ECC Player of the Week honoree, Drzymala earned first-team All-ECC honors after finishing among the league leaders in kills (379 - fourth), kills per set (2.98 - seventh), attacks (1,159 - third), service aces (36 - ninth), and digs (375 - seventh).  She was also named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-East Region Team.

Drzymala, who appeared in 116 matches and helped Daemen to a 62-62 record during her career, registered the 1,000th dig of career during a 3-1 victory over rival Roberts Wesleyan College on Oct. 4.  She would go on to post the 1,000th kill of her career in the team's regular season finale, a 3-1 victory over visiting Mercy College on Nov. 13.  Finishing her career with 1,197 digs and 1,048 kills, Drzymala is one of just three players in team history to surpass 1,000 of each, joining former Wildcats Tristan Seibert (2000-03) and Joanna Fretthold (2009-12).

"We are so proud of Amber for being awarded the ECC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's volleyball," siad Daemen head coach Stephanie Albano.  "Amber is the perfect example of a high achieving student-athlete. She has strong passion, drive, and dedication both on the court and in the classroom. I can't think of a more deserving student-athlete to be the recipient of this award."
