For Communications Women's Triathlon Fall Schedule Announced AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's triathlon team will open the 2017-18 season at the Collegiate Triathlon Central Regional Qualifier on Monday, September 4 in Naperville, Illinois third-year head coach Dr. Jon Metz announced today. The season-opening event marks the first of three competitions for Daemen's triathletes this fall, and it serves as a regional qualifier where the top three finishing teams (with five members) and at least the top two finishing individuals can earn automatic berths for the Collegiate Triathlon National Championship which is slated for Sunday, November 5 in Tempe, Arizona.  It will be the second-straight year that Daemen has opened its season at the Central Regional Qualifier; now-graduated triathlete Ashley Cheff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) paced the Wildcats at the meet last season, finishing third out of 28 competitors. Just six days later, on Sunday, September 10, Metz will see his team compete in its closest event of the fall season in terms of proximity to campus - the Finger Lakes Triathlon in Canandaigua, N.Y., some 85 miles to the east.  The Wildcats will be competing there for the third-straight season.  Returning triathletes Jenifer Igoe (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) and Nichole Geiger (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) finished second and third, respectively, in the female 20-24 age group at this event last season. The team's abbreviated fall season comes to a close on Sunday, September 24 at another familiar event - the Deer Creek Fall Challenge in Mt. Sterling, Ohio.  Geiger and Igoe return after finishing one-two, respectively, in the female 20-24 age group last year. "We are excited for the 2017-18 season, and I am looking forward to our best season yet," said Metz who has the reins of the program since its inception in the 2015-16 academic year. "Our returning veterans are eager to take on leadership roles as we welcome our new student-athletes." The 2017-18 season will continue during the spring semester, and additional competitions will be announced at a later date. The sport of triathlon, which combines swimming, biking and running into a race-style event, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 14 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.
