Borges Named To NABC Honors Court For Second-Straight Year By: Mike Miranto, Associate A.D. For Communications Men's Basketball | 7/18/2017 10:05:00 AM AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College men's basketball player Alex Borges (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, recognizing his academic achievement during the 2016-17 academic year. Borges, academically classified as a senior in 2016-17, was a Pre-Med major prior to his graduation in May.  He met the high standard of academic criteria to be considered for the NABC Honors Court, which is as follows: 1. Academically, a junior or senior, and a varsity player 2. Cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year 3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution 4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II or III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach This marks the second-straight year that Borges has been named to the NABC Honors Court, and the fifth-straight year that the Wildcats have been represented.  Previous Honors Court selections include Arif Mehmetaj (Jamaica, N.Y./SUNY Delhi) in 2014-15, and Aaron Davis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Troy Nowak (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) who each earned the accolade in 2012-13 and 2013-14. "Since his days at Mercyhurst Prep, Alex Borges has embodied the term 'student-athlete'.  He continued that during his time here at Daemen," said head coach Mike MacDonald.  "It is truly fitting that Alex finished his career by being named our Team Award recipient, which was voted on by his teammates, and by being named to the NABC Honors Court for the second time.  If there are two things that Alex proved during his time here, he was an exceptional teammate and an outstanding student.  Our program is better because Alex was a part of it." On the court, Borges appeared in 27 of the Wildcats' 28 games this past season, averaging 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds in 6.6 minutes per game.  He scored a season-high five points in a 75-64 win over Caldwell University in Daemen's season opener on November 11, 2016.  He went on to make his second career start in the Wildcats' regular season home finale against Queens College on February 22, 2017. Borges closed out his career with 99 games played, 731 minutes, 169 points, 137 rebounds and 19 blocks.  Over the course of his four-year career, he helped the Wildcats to an 80-36 overall record, including a 38-19 mark in the team's first two seasons as a full-fledged NCAA Division II program. With his college basketball career over and his undergraduate degree in tow, Borges is headed to medical school at American University of the Caribbean on the island of St. Maarten.  Print Friendly Version Players Mentioned #41 Alex Borges F/C 6' 6" Senior #21 Arif Mehmetaj F 6' 7" Redshirt Senior Players Mentioned #41 Alex Borges 6' 6" Senior F/C #21 Arif Mehmetaj 6' 7" Redshirt Senior F
