Women's Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team was one of 118 NCAA Division II recipients of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, announced by the organization Monday.

The award, which was instituted following the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during the 2016-17 academic year.  Daemen's cumulative grade-point average for the year was 3.48.

"I am extremely proud of this hard working team," said head coach Stephanie Albano.  "In the past year, our team has proven that you can be highly successful both on and off the court. This award is well deserved as our student-athletes had an unparalleled focus and determination in their studies this past year."

Daemen joins New York Institute of Technology as the lone East Coast Conference affiliates to receive the award this year.  A record 822 teams were named as award recipients, spanning all collegiate levels down to the high school ranks.

The award is the latest recognition from the AVCA for the Daemen women's volleyball program.  Albano was named the AVCA Division II East Region Coach of the Year last fall, and followed up by being named one of the AVCA 30 Under 30 Award recipients in the spring.  For the latter, Albano was featured in the summer issue of Coaching Volleyball Magazine.

Daemen, which is coming off a historic 2016 season that included the program's first ECC regular season championship and NCAA Tournament berth, brings back eight players for the 2017 campaign which gets underway on September 1-2 at the Quality Inn Crimson Hawk Invitational hosted by Indiana University (Pa.).
