Coach Jon Metz's team will be making their second straight appearance at the Clermont Draft Legal Challenge. The event includes the Age Group Draft Legal Open Race on March 3, and Daemen team members will additionally have the opportunity to compete on Sunday, March 4 for the event's Under-25 Elite Development Race. Following the early March trip to The Sunshine State, the Wildcats will be idle until Saturday, May 5 when they partake in the Fly By Night Duathlon at Watkins Glen International Speedway. "Our primary goal this spring is to hone our skills and have fun as we prepare our team to earn a spot at the 2018 national championship next fall," said Metz. The Wildcats are coming off a successful fall season that saw redshirt freshman Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) earn a pair of regional accolades and compete in the 2017 national championship meet. Custodi, who finished 15th overall (out of 51 total entrants) at the season-opening Collegiate Triathlon Central Regional Qualifier on September 4, was the No. 1 finisher among Division II freshmen and the No. 2 finisher among all Division II participants which earned her Division II All-Region Freshman and Division II All-Region Team honors from the College Triathlon Coaches Association. She went on to post a first-place finish at the Deer Creek Fall Challenge, and placed 44th out of a record 81 competitors at the national championship meet held November 5 in Tempe, Arizona. The sport of triathlon, which combines swimming, biking and running into a race-style event, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 23 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.
