AMHERST, N.Y. - Junior Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) of the Daemen College men's tennis team was named a second team All-East Coast Conference honoree for the 2017-18 season today. It marked the second straight year that Ruiz Martinez has been so honored, and he remains the only player in team history to earn an all-conference selection. The official announcement of the All-ECC teams, which were voted on by the league's six head coaches, was made in a press release today from conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y.
Ruiz Martinez posted a combined singles/doubles record of 29-24 this season, the most wins for any player in a single season in team history. He went 17-9 in singles play, shattering the prior team record for singles wins in a season which was held by teammate Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.) for his 13 wins during the 2015-16 season. His singles prowess this season included a 3-2 record in ECC matches. He was especially tough down the stretch, winning nine of his last 12 singles matches. The majority of Ruiz Martinez's singles matches came in the second position in Daemen's lineup where he posted a 10-3 record. His .654 winning percentage in singles play for the season established a new team record. Only Ruiz Martinez and Veitengruber, who went 15-10 in singles play this season, have posted winning percentages higher than .600 for a season in the six-year history of the program.Â
In doubles play, Ruiz Martinez went 12-15, tying him for second all-time at Daemen for doubles wins in a season. He teamed with fellow junior David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) to record 10 of those victories, the only pair for the Wildcats that posted double-figure victories this season.
Since joining the team midway through the 2016-17 season, Ruiz Martinez has been arguably the Wildcats' most consistent player. He holds a combined singles/doubles record of 47-38 in his time with the Wildcats, including a 27-16 mark in singles play. He already ranks fifth in combined wins and tied for third in singles wins among Daemen's all-time leaders.
The announcement today marks the third straight season that Ruiz Martinez has earned an accolade at the conference level. In addition to his second team All-ECC selection last year, he was an All-Rookie Team selection in the Northeast-10 Conference for the 2015-16 season while competing for American International College.Â
As a team, finished the season with a 7-17 record, matching the program record for wins in a season.
