Women's Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team was one of 128 NCAA Division II teams to receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, announced Tuesday by the organization. It marks the second straight year that the Wildcats have earned this academic accolade.

The award, which was instituted following the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during the 2017-18 academic year. Daemen's cumulative grade-point average for the year was 3.59.

"I am very proud of the hard work and dedication our student-athletes continue to display in the classroom," said head coach Stephanie Albano.  "To be the only repeat honoree from our league is something we can take pride in."

Daemen joins Long Island University Post as the lone East Coast Conference affiliates to receive the award this year.  A record 973 teams were named as award recipients, spanning all collegiate levels down to the high school ranks.

Daemen, which has posted a 36-24 record over Albano's first two years as head coach, is set to return 10 players from their 2017 roster who accounted for 74 percent of the team's total kills and 73 percent of the team's total digs. The 2018 season officially gets underway with the Daemen Volleyball Classic presented by Millennium Buffalo on August 24-25 at Lumsden Gymnasium.
